Carolyn Pittman, Arkansas, was elected and installed at the 2016 International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
Pittman has served as SE Regional Director, Member At Large 2008-2012, First Vice President 2012-2014.
Carolyn was the chair of the international convention held in Little Rock, AR. She is a retired English teacher and writes for several distinguished publications. She has also performed in live theater in Arkansas (along with her daughter, Laura Holcomb Mosley, who now teaches in Aurora, CO. at an IB Elementary School).
Pittman states: “…the president is obligated to lead in her knowledge of the Society, her thinking, her manner, her words, her commitment, her actions, her heart and her spirit. The position of president is not about the person; it is about attending to the sustainability, advancement, and goodwill of this organization.”
Pittman will be joined on the board by: First Vice President, Barbara Whiting, MN; Second Vice President, Becky Sadowski, TN; Members at Large-- June Bowers, NE, 2016-2020; Hannah Fowler, GA, 2014-2018. Plus, Regional directors from the SW, SE, NE, Europe, and NW regions the Latin-American Representative, Canadian Representative.
Southwest Regional Director-- Pat Park, Hawaii, will direct the 2017 SW Regional in Honolulu. July 4-7, 2017.
Our Latin American Representative (SW) is Flor Perez, Costa Rica.

Immediate Past International President, Dr. Lyn Schmid served the 2014-2016 biennium. Her theme for the biennium was "85 Years and Beyond, Advancing Key Women Educators for Life." Dr. Schmid served six years on the administrative board. Dr. Schmid is from Pennsylvania and is a retired elementary principal.
Immediate Past International President, Dr. Beverly Helms, Florida Retires from the Administrative Board in 2016, having served 12 years on the board. Thank you, Dr. Beverly, for your leadership and innovations.
Past International President, Dr. Beverly Helms, Florida, elected as the 2012-2014 International President of DKG at the convention in New York City, July 23-28, 2012. Dr. Helms theme for this new biennium is "Sharing Our Vision . . . Strengthening Our Society." Japan was installed as our 18th country in 2012. 60 members formed the first Asian continent state organization.
Excerpts from Dr. Helms' acceptance speech follow. Dr. Helms challenged each and every member to work to "Strengthen DKG." Increasing membership and strengthening the chapters we now have was first and foremost in Dr. Helms' challenges. Also an emphasis on the 'Early Career Educators,' plus an increased involvement in advocating for legislative changes and legal policy that affects our members as well as all the educators worldwide.
Dr. Helms stated, "This is not about me! This is about you and your work to strengthen our Society." Chapters and members are the key factors in continuing to make our Society strong!
Dr. Helms has held many offices and committee positions at the international level~ S.E. Regional Director 2000-2002, Member at Large 2004-2008, Second Vice-President 2010-2012, and now president. Dr. Helms was a member of the international leadership committee and chaired the 2008-2010 communications committee.
Dr. Helms is well known as a key-note speaker, workshop presenter, and leadership seminar presenter. Her educational background and experience is in speech pathology and administration. Her undergrad and masters degree, plus her Ed.D. are from Florida State University.
Dr. Helms received the Society's most prestigious honor, the international achievement award, in 2010. She attended the two week Golden Gift Leadership Management Seminar in Austin, Tx. at the McComb School of Business, in 2004.
Dr. Helms was initiated in the Florida state organization of DKG in 1974 and was installed as international president in 2012.

Someone said, "We drink from wells, we did not dig." We are all here on the 'backs and endeavors of others.' Someone else paved the way. Even though we work to make things better, they were made better for us before we got our 'chance.'
