Press Release: Committee Chairs and Administrative Board Meet in Spokane, Washington, for
International Planning Meeting for the 2012-2014 Biennium
Appointed by international president, Dr. Beverly Helms, Kathy Flynn is the chair of the 2012-2014 Educators Award Committee. This is Kathy's third appointment to an international committee and her first as a committee chair. The planning meeting and leadership training for the administrative board and all committee chairs was held in Spokane, WA., Sept. 7-9. As a committee chair, Kathy met with and exchanged ideas and leadership visions with other Society leaders. Dr. Helms' theme -- Sharing Our Vision -- Strengthening Our Society -- inspired participants to consider the many ways that vision leads to leadership success.
The training session reviewed the roles and responsibilities of the international committees, shared leadership ideas and discussed specific ideas towards strategic plans for the future. Each committee chair received a manual filled with materials about leadership and team-building strategies as well as suggested processes for specific committee work.
The Educators Award was conceived in 1947 by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton and has been awarded since that time. The Educators Award Committee annually presents $2,500 Educators Award as a means to recognize educational research and writing of a woman author or two women authors. Her/Their book must have the potential to influence the thought and action necessary to meet the needs of today's complex society. receives submissions from publishers and authors of researched based books that will have a significant impact on education.
Each committee member will read and evaluate all works submitted that meet the criteria. The chair presides at the committee selection meeting, determines that the book meets the criteria of the award, and reports to the regional conference and international convention the book selected each year of the biennium.
