BOOKS 4 KIDS (1998-2015) --17 years of providing books for St. Vrain children
Books were provided to Timberline K-8 School in 2014. Over 2000 books were given to the students as their own personal books to take home. Another 500 books were given to Mountain View Elementary school. Northridge Elementary will be the recipient of the Books 4 Kids in 2015. Northridge will hold a special parent meeting to assist parents in promoting reading at home and over the summer. Principal Lorynda Sampson has initiated this project along with her Title 1 reading specialists.

In 1997-98, Mu Chapter began a project to place books in the hands of children in the St. Vrain Community. Members changed the annual Christmas ornament exchange and brought new books for children in the St. Vrain community. During the first year the project, originated by Kathy Flynn and coordinated by Aileen Solt, placed books at the Teen Parenting Center at the Career Development Center. Since its inception, during the late 90's and early 2000's the project grew to include book donations from Mu Chapter to the Tiny Tim Learning Center and The Inn Between. In 2006, the project expanded to include the Title I schools in St. Vrain Valley Schools. Donations were gathered from many elementary schools to support the Title I schools. In 2008, Rosie Anderson promoted a liaison with Borders Books and the project grew exponentially.
In 2009-2010, the project placed approximately 7,000 books in the hands of Title I elementary students, Teen Parenting, and Tiny Tim Center. This year will be the 17th year of the project nd continues to serve children in the St. Vrain Valley.
In 2011, Borders Books in Longmont and nationwide closed. We are looking for a new partner to help provide books. Books will again be collected at the elementary schools for the project and any who would like to donate new or nearly new books are urged to contact president Cheryl Barnett

History of Columbine Elementary School
Reminiscent of a classic Norman Rockwell painting, Columbine is quietly snuggled in historic east side Longmont among majestic oak and maple-lined streets standing as a monument to Longmont’s rich educational roots. The current campus encompasses three buildings including the original red stone building that opened its doors in 1906. Major improvements were completed in 2006-2007 through a SVVSD school bond project.

With the emphasis on Collaborative Connections during international president Dr. Barbara Day's biennium, Mu Chapter began several liaison projects with St. Vrain Schools. Connecting with Novice and newly hired teachers has been a project that has taken on many faces. 'New Teacher Welcome Bags' were introduced in 2008 and were given out at 'New Teacher Orientation' in the fall. 185 new teachers came on board in St. Vrain in 2008 and all received Welcome Bags. During the next two years, Mu Chapter had an information booth at the orientation and also presented 'door prizes' of coupons to Borders Books and office supply businesses. We asked the teachers for information on which school they were assigned, teaching specialty, and the number of years of experience they brought to St. Vrain. Through these contacts, we followed with a folder on all the benefits of Collaborative Connections and the benefits of membership in Mu Chapter.
The membership and professional affairs committee are working together on connecting with our new teachers through personal visits, information and welcome bags. Membership is holding a 'Meet and Greet' each October at Panera Bread. Follow up will continue throughout the year with the "Teacher Connection" professional affairs and membership committee.
Community Connection: Safe Shelter For the past twenty-nine years (1996-2015), Mu Chapter has supported Safe Shelter (formerly Longmont Coalition for Women in Crisis) with monetary donations and various supplies for the residents served by Safe Shelter. Traditionally, the gift from Mu Chapter is between $300 and $500 annually, plus supplies, gifts, etc. http://www.safeshelterofstvrain.org/safe-shelter-history
VOLUNTEER READING PROJECT
Coordinator: Gail Ward
In 2004, a volunteer reading project was begun at Spangler Elementary in Longmont. Six volunteer readers spent 1 1/2 to 2 hrs one day a week reading one on one with elementary students who were working to read at grade level. This project was coordinated by Gail Ward, literacy and volunteer coordinator at Spangler. Teachers identified students they felt would benefit from reading with a volunteer. Each volunteer reader was trained in the "Read to Succeed" Pause, Prompt and Praise program. Students benefited from the extra instruction, were mentored by the one on one setting, and the volunteers were rewarded by the cooperation, determination and enthusiasm of the young readers. Mu Chapter is seeking to establish this project at Northridge Elementary in 2010-2011. Northridge annually hosts a 'Read In' Day, and Mu Chapter, DKG, has contributed books to Northridge through the Books 4 Kids project for the past 5 years.
